About the Visa
An Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) is an electronic travel visa linked to the applicant’s passport permitting travel to Australia for tourism and business purposes. As an ETA is an electronic travel visa, there is no stamp or label in the passport and passport holders from ETA-eligible countries can obtain an ETA online.
An ETA is a travel visa that is valid for one year and successful applicants are permitted to travel to Australia and stay for up to three months per visit.

Travellers seeking to enter Australia on an ETA may not be permitted entry unless they are in good health and have no criminal convictions for which the sentence or sentences (whether served or not) are for a total period of 12 months duration or more.
The candidate must have no outstanding debts to the Australian Government or have arranged to repay any outstanding debts to the Australian Government before this visa can be granted.
Each family member travelling with him/her to Australia will need a separate ETA. This includes any children younger than 18 years of age who are included on his/her passport.
What visa lets you do?
An ETA is a travel visa that is valid for one year and successful applicants are permitted to travel to Australia and stay for up to three months per visit.
Your ETA lets you:
- to enter Australia for up to three months at a time
- to have a holiday or visit family and friends in Australia
- to study in Australia for up to three months, in some circumstances
- To work as a genuine unpaid volunteer, but only if an Australian resident would not otherwise be paid to do that type of work (you can be reimbursed for out-of-pocket expenses such as meals and accommodation).
To engage in business visitor activities while in Australia, provided you:
- do not work for or provide services to a business or organization in Australia
- Do not sell goods or services to the public.
Business visitor activities that you can do include:
- making general business or employment enquiries
- investigating, negotiating, signing or reviewing a business contract
- activities carried out as part of an official government-to-government visit
- Participating in conferences, trade fairs or seminars, as long as you are not being paid by the organizers for your participation.

What you must not do if you hold this visa
- Cannot stay in Australia for longer than three months on each visit.
- Cannot study for more than three months.
- cannot work while you are in Australia, other than for:
- making general business or employment enquiries
- investigating, negotiating, signing or reviewing a business contract
- activities carried out as part of an official government-to-government visit
- Participating in conferences, trade fairs or seminars, as long as you are not being paid by the organizers for your participation.
