The Post-Study Work stream (Subclass 485) is designed for international students who have recently graduated with a degree from an Australian institution. This visa allows you to live, work, and study in Australia temporarily. • With this visa, you can: • Stay in Australia for between 2 to 4 years after completing your studies. • Applicants with a select degree may be eligible for an extended 2 years on their visa. • Travel, work, or study in Australia during your stay. • Find your own employment while on this visa; the responsibility for arranging employment lies with you.
- How long can you stay: This is a temporary visa, and the length of your stay depends on your Australian study qualification and whether you have a select degree:
- Bachelor degree (including honours): 2 years
- Bachelor degree (including honours) in select degree: 4 years
- Masters by research and masters by coursework: 3 years
- Masters by research and masters by coursework in select degree: 5 years
- Masters (extended): 3 years
- Masters (extended) in select degree: 5 years
- Doctoral degree: 6 years
- Hong Kong and BNO passport holders who successfully complete a degree: 5 years The visa starts on the date it is granted, and extensions for select degree holders can only be granted once.
- Stay longer: You cannot extend this visa to stay longer. However, you may be eligible to apply for a second Post Study Work stream visa if you live, work, and/or study in a regional area while holding your first post-study work visa. Current and future temporary graduate visa holders from Hong Kong may have a pathway to permanent residency after 5 years.
- Include family: You can include family members in your application, provided they meet health and character requirements. Children can be added until a decision is made, but other family members cannot be added during that period. Your family can also apply to join you in Australia as subsequent entrants after the visa is granted.
The visa costs AUD1,895.00 for the main applicant, with additional charges for family members applying with you. Subsequent entrants must pay the full visa application charge. There may also be other costs for health checks, police certificates, and biometrics.
- Apply from: You can apply for this visa from inside Australia, but not in immigration clearance when you apply or when the visa is granted. Graduates affected by COVID-19 travel restrictions may also apply for and be granted this visa outside Australia. Subsequent entrants can apply from inside or outside Australia.

- Processing times: Processing times vary, with 25% of applications processed in 52 days, 50% in 56 days, 75% in 3 months, and 90% in 8 months. Failure to pay the correct visa application charge will lead to application processing issues.
