As of July 1, 2024, there will be important changes to applying for a Student visa in Australia. These changes aim to ensure the integrity of the student visa program and attract genuine students who want to study in Australia.

What’s changing?

Previously, visitors and temporary graduates in Australia could apply for a Student visa onshore (from within Australia). However, this pathway is no longer available.

What does this mean for you?

  • If you are currently on a Visitor visa: You will no longer be able to apply for a Student visa onshore. You will need to apply for a Student visa offshore (from outside Australia).
  • If you are on a Temporary Graduate visa: You are also no longer eligible to apply for a Student visa onshore. Consider your options for applying for a Student visa offshore, or for other visa pathways that may suit your circumstances.

Who is Affected?

The holders of the following temporary visas will no longer be eligible to apply for a Student visa onshore:

  • – Temporary Graduate (Subclass 485)
  • – Visitor (Subclass 600)
  • – Electronic Travel Authority (Subclass 601)
  • – Other Subclasses:
    • – Medical Treatment (Subclass 602)
    • – eVisitor (Subclass 651)
    • – Transit (Subclass 771)
    • – Maritime Crew (Subclass 988)
    • – Diplomatic Temporary (Subclass 995) – Primary visa holders only
    • – Specific Temporary Work Visa streams:
    • – Domestic Worker (Diplomatic or Consular) (Subclass 403)
    • – Domestic Worker (Temporary) – Diplomatic or Consular (Subclass 426)

Why are these changes happening?

The Australian government is committed to attracting genuine students who want to contribute to the country’s skilled workforce. These changes aim to streamline the Student visa process and ensure that visas are granted to those who meet the program’s criteria.
